Flag Football Equipment Checklist for Coaches and Parents

Whether you're coaching your first youth flag football team or helping your child gear up for their first game, the right equipment can make a huge difference. It’s not just about showing up with a ball, it’s about being prepared, organized, and creating a smooth, fun experience for everyone involved.

If you want to crush it on game day and make practices run like clockwork, you’re in the right place. We’ve created a complete flag football equipment checklist to help coaches and parents stay ahead of the game.

Let’s gear up!

Why Flag Football Equipment Matters

Flag football is all about speed, safety, and skill, but none of that works without the right setup. Having the proper gear means:

  • Safer, more enjoyable practices
  • Faster setup and breakdown
  • Fewer delays and distractions
  • More confidence for players (and coaches!)

And here’s the good news, you don’t need a truckload of gear. Just the essentials.

Coach’s Flag Football Equipment Checklist

If you’re coaching, your gear needs to cover the team, the drills, and the game plan. Here’s what should be in your bag:

Flag Belts (Enough for Every Player)
Make sure each player has a flag belt with at least two detachable flags. Grab a few extras in case of mid-game malfunctions. Also, perfect for practicing at home or at the park!

Football (Youth Size - HS Size coming soon)
Stick with age-appropriate footballs. The perfect size = easier catches and more confident throws. Players LOVE these footballs. Get 3-5 so your practices move quickly through stations. (Each football is signed by Coach D)

Cones and Field Markers
Perfect for setting up end zones, sideline boundaries, drill lanes, or dividing up your field space fast.

Wristband Play Inserts
These are game changers. Let your players run plays confidently with pre-loaded plays in their wristbands.

Coach Binder
Print out your drills, team list, playbook pages, and notes. Having it all in one spot keeps you sharp.

Whistle and Stopwatch
You don’t need to yell over 12 kids. Use a whistle to keep them on track and a stopwatch to manage reps and rotations.

First Aid Kit
Scraped knees and stubbed fingers are part of the game. A basic first aid kit = peace of mind.

Coach Dry Erase Clipboard (Optional but Awesome)
Use it for drawing plays on the fly or explaining formations. Visual learning helps big time. You see Coach D using this in most of his videos.

Parent’s Flag Football Gear List

Helping your child have the best flag football season ever? Here’s what parents should pack or prep:

Mouthguard
Some leagues make them optional, but they’re always a smart idea, especially for older age groups.

Athletic Shorts (No Pockets!)
Why? Pockets can snag flags and fingers. Look for pocketless shorts or have them sewn shut.

Cleats (Non-Metal)
Grippy cleats = better speed and fewer slips. Just make sure they’re rubber-soled, metal spikes are a no-go in flag football. (highly recommended)

Wide Receiver Gloves
Make catching the football much easier with a pair of wide receiver gloves. Your athlete will notice a major difference as the ball sticks to their hands when they go for the catch. (highly recommended)

Water Bottle (Labelled!)
Keep your athlete hydrated before, during, and after. Pro tip: toss in some fruit slices for bonus points.

Flag Belt (If Required to Bring Their Own)
Some leagues require players to bring their own belts. Ask early so you’re not scrambling on game day.

Practice Attitude
This one’s free, but it’s huge. Remind your athlete that fun, focus, and teamwork matter more than winning.
