Game Day Checklist for Flag Football Coaches

Game day isn’t just about showing up, it’s about showing up ready. When you’re the coach, your preparation sets the tone for your players, parents, and even your opponents.

Whether it’s your first game or your fiftieth, having a game day checklist helps you stay organised, focused, and in control. The best part? You don’t need to stress or scramble. We’ve built the ultimate flag football game day checklist so you can walk onto the field with total confidence.

Let’s gear up and crush game day, the Coach D way.

Why a Game Day Checklist Matters

Ever forget your whistle or cones? Left the flag belts at home? Forgot which playsheet you were using? We've all been there.

Having a solid checklist ensures:

  • Your players are ready
  • Your equipment is in order
  • You’re mentally prepared
  • The game flows smoothly

Preparation = confidence. And confidence = results.

Coach D’s Game Day Checklist

Here's everything you need, all in one place. Print it. Save it. Memorize it. This is your go-to guide for game day success.

Equipment Essentials

Make sure your gear bag is packed the night before:

  • Game ball (youth-sized, properly inflated)
  • Flag belts (enough for the whole team + extras)
  • Team jerseys or shirts (if necessary)
  • Extra mouthguards
  • Pinnies (if you're the away team or for scrimmages)
  • Cones or field markers
  • Clipboard or coach binder
  • Stopwatch or timer app
  • Printed playsheets (and wristband versions) or Wristbands themselves
  • First aid kit
  • Whistle (trust us, don’t forget this)
  • Towel (for wet grass or cleaning the ball)
  • Water, Sunscreen, Sunglasses

Mental & Tactical Prep

Great coaches don’t just pack gear, they prep their minds and strategies too.

  • Review your starting lineup and your rotation strategy
  • Revisit 3–5 core plays to focus on
  • Think through your defense & planned adjustments
  • Know your timeout plan and how to manage the clock
  • Prep motivational messages or huddle-ups
  • Review your opponents if you’ve played them before
  • Keep it simple, don’t overload your players

Parent & Player Communication

A smooth game day starts with clear communication:

  • Send out a reminder with arrival time, field location, and uniform color
  • Let parents know about snack duties, carpool, or sideline expectations
  • Ask players to arrive 30 minutes early for warm-ups (when possible, every second counts)
  • Remind parents to bring water, sunscreen, mouthguard, gloves, cleats, and no-pocket shorts or pants
  • Let them know you’re there for any questions, open communication builds trust

Warm-Up Routine (20–30 Minutes Before Kickoff)

Start with energy, focus, and purpose:

  1. Dynamic stretches (arm circles, high knees, lunges)
  2. Cone drills (agility, backpedal, side shuffle)
  3. Passing warm-up (QBs and receivers)
  4. Flag pulling practice (quick reaction drills)
  5. Review 2–3 plays on the wristbands
  6. Team huddle and mindset reset

The goal? Get the players’ bodies warm, minds sharp, and team spirit fired up.

During the Game

Your role doesn’t stop once the whistle blows.

  • Stay positive, coach with confidence, always coach in the moment
  • Rotate players fairly and consistently
  • Keep hydration and rest breaks organized
  • Use timeouts strategically (for resets or teaching moments)
  • Celebrate big AND small wins (pulls, effort, sportsmanship)
  • Stick to your game plan, but be ready to adapt

Post-Game Wrap-Up

Finish strong, your post-game talk can leave a lasting impact.

  • Highlight effort and teamwork over the scoreboard
  • Thank your players and parents
  • Remind everyone about the next practice or game
  • Take quick notes on what went well and what to work on
  • Optional: team photo or high-five line for the memories!
