Hi everyone this is coach Dwight with a quick tutorial for your quarterbacks how do i throw the football how do i hold it where do i let it go what does perfect form look like and what is perfect form for me what do i do with a drop back a three step uh seven step etc let's get started
number one how do i hold the football now everybody has their own style but let's say you're peyton manning you might put your finger up here but what you notice is you usually hold the football across the laces okay you've got your fingers here on an even hold right across those laces so that when i'm spinning that ball i can really let it go and it'll spiral nicely another thing you notice is my my index finger is a little bit higher than my others i'm not holding it down here all together i'm not holding it all together up here i've spread them out evenly with my forefinger my index finger a little bit higher all right whatever's comfortable and then i have it grabbed here in the back that's a good firm hold i can do a lot with that okay and it's easy to get into it's quick and easy if you want your quarterback to start doing a nice drill where they get comfortable just have them do this over and over and over because they're going to be dropping back they're going to be like you know and you want it to be quick so a nice little drill is them going over and over now let's talk about form when i'm throwing i'm going to back up a little bit so you can see my full body now the first thing i want to do is when i'm about to back that ball is i want to go for a 90 degree angle so check this out if i go up here this is a nice 90 degree i've got 90
Form here and here okay this is a nice i'm dropping back i'm not way back here i'm not over here i'm not doing a sidearm i usually back and i'm about right here okay another thing you notice is i've got my opposite foot planted firmly they always talk about they plant their feet right so you drop back you plant your feet you've got a nice comfortable stance and then you pull it back now what my son likes to do for accuracy is he likes to point to his wide receiver right so at the very beginning when you're first practicing you could try that of course others might have it over here for leverage right so that when i move my body i can really have it here so whatever's comfortable at the very beginning if you want to work on accuracy this is a good way to do it okay and then where do i release that football well if you're going about 10 yards you want to release that ball right about here okay you're gonna be releasing right here not way up here not way back here but about right here
Release so you can get that right in the chest okay you're not trying to float it floating it means that it's going to come out kind of like this you're actually wanting to go in a downward almost a downward motion okay and releasing about right here for a short pass for those longer passes the fly or the deep post you're going to release about over your head about right here now what you'll notice is a lot of quarterbacks will float the ball what that means is they're going to come back and they're going to and they're going to release about right here and then what happens is the ball comes out like this and the ball floats and becomes an interception so you want to work on getting more of a downward even if it's the long ball i'm gonna let go of it right over my head okay even for that long ball okay another nice thing is your footwork watch the footwork as i go back down said hike let's go three step one two three now i'm going to step step release okay two three step step release one two three step step release okay so you can do that in slow motion with your quarterback to work on the accuracy just like a golf swing it's just the same thing it's all about form if you want accuracy don't just put out targets work on the form as well very important last thing i will say
Accuracy is have them target right here every single time right and if you want them to get a nice little movement boom here here here here but don't just stand there they're going to be throwing to people on the run so have them practice throwing to routes i want you to learn the post pattern where do they throw that when do they throw it what's the mark the fly pattern how do i do an over the shoulder right where am i going to be hitting them do not just play pass just like this just standing there they'll never do that in the game all right the quick slant the in the out pattern all the patterns of your plays make sure you're running them over and over with your quarterbacks i hope this helped you if you have any questions let me know happy to help we'll see in the next video
